Why is an internship important?

An internship/co-op experience is a requirement of the occupational safety and health program at Murray State. As an intern, you gain hands-on, day-to-day skills in a real-world environment. You can participate in multiple internship/co-op experiences throughout your college career, making you more competitive in the job market.

How do I secure an internship?

Be placed to your best educational advantage

You receive one-on-one assistance in participating in mock interviews and developing professional resumes. Resumes are compiled by the department and sent to hundreds of companies. Companies, in turn, conduct information sessions and interview you within the department to fill their internship and full-time positions.

While the department makes no guarantee as to assignments and earnings, it makes every effort for you to be placed to your best educational advantage.  

Typical duties performed while on an internship.

• Provide support to safety and health director/coordinator

• Develop written safety training modules

• Conduct training of employees

• Develop written safety programs

• Conduct safety audits/inspections

• Conduct industrial hygiene surveys

• Present oral and written reports concerning industrial hygiene survey results

• Develop and implement projects to resolve environmental issues
